Northern subsidiary of well-known architectural practice enters administration

The northern subsidiary of award-winning architectural practice, careyjones chapmantolcher, was placed into administration on Friday 2 March.  Whilst the London business continues to trade well with a strong forward order book, the northern company had faced difficult times as a result of the poor economic conditions in the regions.

Mike Kienlen and Dave Robson of Armstrong Watson were appointed as joint administrators to ‘Studio North’ advised by Alice Pratt of Leeds law firm Clarion.

The London company remains completely unaffected by the administration of the northern company and continues to trade from its offices in Bloomsbury Square.  It is currently undertaking many quality projects both on site and at design stages.

Joint administrator Mike Kienlen said: “careyjones chapmantolcher is one of the best known architectural practices in the UK and has a national reputation for high quality award winning schemes.  Eighteen months ago the business adopted a new structure, dividing its operations into north and south.  Unfortunately, the northern company has suffered particularly badly from the poor financial conditions in the property market which have delayed the start of many of its projects.  Rather than waiting for cash flow problems to escalate, the management has taken decisive action in order to protect as many of its creditors as possible.”

Chris Jones a former director of careyjones chapmantolcher studio north said:

“Regrettably, we felt we had to take the decision, with our advisers, to place the existing northern operational company into administration in response to the greatly reduced workload. I am pleased to announce that the group shareholders have agreed to invest in a new business which will be called ‘leeds studio’. We are delighted to say that our clients who we have worked with personally for many years, have been incredibly supportive and we look forward to working with them for many years to come - providing them with a top quality service which they have grown to expect.

“We are in the process of assessing our future workload with our clients and building our team accordingly.”

Mike Kienlen
