Accountancy firm Armstrong Watson is extremely proud to announce that four of its accountancy trainee students have successfully secured places in all top three winning teams at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales Apprentice Business Challenge 2013 National Final, which took place in London at PWC’s London Offices this week.
Laura Watson (Carlisle) and Whitney Savage (Penrith) were both in the winning team, scooping gold medals while Stephanie Kealey (Leeds) was in the team securing silver medals, and Katie Paisley (Carlisle) was in the third team, achieving a bronze medal, in the final of this prestigious competition.
Stephanie Kealey also won the overall Top Apprentice Award at the event.
The top three teams along with a representative from Armstrong Watson have been invited to a winners day at the Chartered Accountants Hall in London on the 4th of October to collect their medals.
Louise Duffy, Training Manager at Armstrong Watson Commented:
‘Having four of our trainees in the top three winning teams in this national competition is a fantastic achievement and we’re very proud of our winners. It demonstrates the high level of skill and talent of Laura, Whitney, Stephanie and Katie, and shows their dedication to the profession. At Armstrong Watson, we’re committed to recruiting and training new talent for the sector and the recent success in this competition shows the caliber of trainees we’re proud to have.’
Sharon Spice, Head of Student Recruitment and Marketing at ICAEW led the judging panel and said of the competition: “The case study has challenged the apprentices to look at a business in terms of the bigger picture. To think of all the various aspects of the business and link them together – not think of each aspect in isolation.”
ICAEW’s Apprentice Business Challenge, challenged participants to provide advice to the Board of Directors of a company in the same way as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant would do. Based on a case study of a real business the students had to analyse, discuss and make recommendations about a number of business issues, before presenting their ideas to a panel of business professionals.
This national competition is based around an interactive business game designed to test the knowledge, skills and creativity of apprentices, and their approach to working as part of a team on a real business issue, and celebrates the best upcoming talent in the Accountancy Sector.
The final was based upon a hairdressing business. The final five teams were given the management accounts, budgets and some other non-financial information on two suppliers for the business. The teams then had to decide which supplier that would be best to go with and complete some accounts for the business. In the second task, teams were given a staff incentive scheme which they then had to analyse and give suggestions upon how it could be improved. The competition ended with each team giving a presentation of their findings and suggestions.
