Some time ago I was invited to go on BBC Radio Cumbria’s Money Talks programme by its presenter Julie Clayton. I am unsure who recommended me to the BBC but I felt it was quite an honour.
However as the date drew nearer I became nervous, I had never done anything like this before. The moment arrived and Julie and the other guest really put me at ease. I contributed to various topical discussions including being put on the spot to name the only “lake” in The Lake District.
My main purpose of being there was to talk about the greatly overlooked and extremely generous Research & Development (R&D) Tax Relief. There are many misconceptions around this relief, the main one being what I call “The Man in the White Coat” mentality, in other words R&D only involves laboratories and chemicals. This is SO far from the truth.
Luckily, I was given the opportunity to address this pre-conceived idea and also elaborate by describing a real example from my own experience.
Will I go on the radio again if asked? Yes
Was it as nerve racking as I expected? No
Are there still lots of companies missing out on a generous tax relief? Most definitely
