'The Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) is the UK’s national low level waste (LLW) disposal facility and located on the West Cumbrian coast approximately 7km south east of Sellafield.
On the 29 July 2007 LLW Repository Limited separated from the Sellafield site and became one of the first Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) sites to be competed and become a stand alone Site Licence Company.
We appointed Armstrong Watson as our Research & Development (R&D) tax relief advisers due to their strong technical knowledge in this particular area of tax, and their willingness to respond to our tight deadlines in preparing our R&D reports. Their flexible approach and clear advice is of great value to LLWR and has assisted us in returning value for money to the NDA.
We highly recommend Armstrong Watson’s R&D tax services to any company undertaking R&D.'
Lloyd Pitcairn, Head of Finance and IT, LLW Repository Limited
We were put in touch with Armstrong Watson by a colleague. Our first point of contact was Steve Roberts, a very knowledgeable professional. Following our initial meeting with Steve we decided that it was time to change our accountants. Armstrong Watson has helped our business immeasurably by restructuring it in a tax efficient way. They are experts, friendly and nothing ever seems too much trouble. All members of the various teams that we deal with on a daily basis are professional and nice. We can highly recommend them. Armstrong Watson are now our payroll, book-keeping, personal and business accountants!!

Following the death of my grandmother, I had been helping my grandfather sort out his affairs. He wanted to get everything in order but was unsure how to go about doing so and wanted minimal disruption to his life in that he was not keen on having to go and sit in an office with someone he didn’t know or who didn't understand his situation. We were referred to Armstrong Watson following completion of a Will as it came to light that there was going to be a large inheritance tax liability upon his death. We were unsure what we could do to try and mitigate this given the fact that the majority of the wealth was in property. There was also a complicated family history and therefore it was important to my grandfather that he retained control over his assets.
Steve came to visit my grandfather in his own home and immediately put him at ease. He listened to everything he had to say and was able to explain a complicated scenario in a plain and simple language which my grandfather was able to understand. Steve was able to outline a number of scenarios and options for consideration which we had not thought about. Not only have we been able to potentially mitigate any inheritance tax liability of what we thought was originally going be over £150,000, we have been able to get everything in order exactly how my grandfather wanted while allowing him to maintain the aspect of control. He also has peace of mind that his wishes will be adhered to when he is no longer with us.
We did not think this outcome was possible, and therefore would highly recommend Steve Roberts and Armstrong Watson for their knowledge and expertise, professionalism and courtesy.
In developing our business, to provide high speed devices for fibre-optics systems at the limit of technology today, u2t Photonics UK has needed to have a tight rein on the financial management of the company while we are focused on the technical and business challenges.
For financial support at u2t, we have relied on Armstrong Watson to provide sound financial advice but also more practical help where, for example, they have taken tasks on to allow us to get on with our main job. Responses to questions have been dealt with in an accurate and extremely timely manner which is important in a small technology business. At an early stage in the life cycle of a company it is particularly important that the development costs are well managed. Armstrong Watson educated us on the options for managing our tax affairs and ensured we made the most of tax measures which support small and medium sized enterprises. This most especially applies to the use of the tax credit offer from government which allows us to keep tight controls on our R&D costs.
In summary we have been delighted with the support, interaction and responsiveness which we experienced with Armstrong Watson, right from our first engagement with them four years ago.

I contacted Nigel after reading an article in Taxation about EBTs. I liked the simplicity of the idea and how it involved working with the tax system rather than against it. The idea enabled me to reach a favourable EBT settlement with HMRC. I have subsequently used Nigel’s knowledge of R&D tax credits to help a manufacturing business that I am a director of. Once again, I am delighted by the outcome. I am keen for Nigel and Armstrong Watson to play a bigger role with a number of companies I am involved with.

We are a leading UK manufacturer based in West Yorkshire, we undertake research and development to produce environmentally friendly and innovative protective packaging solutions.
Armstrong Watson advised us on the potential for making a claim for R&D expenditure and Steve Holmes guided us through the entire process. Steve’s friendly, proactive approach, sound advice and in-depth knowledge of a complex tax area, secured a considerable reduction in our corporation tax bill. I would recommend Steve’s services to anyone who might be in a position to claim R&D tax relief.

We were involved in carrying out the refurbishment of several existing warehouse buildings on the site which were clad in asbestos sheeting and we intended to replace the covering with modern materials.
When it was pointed out to Armstrong Watson that these buildings were being redeveloped and they had contained asbestos, they suggested submitting a land remediation relief claim to cover the cost of removing the asbestos and the replacement materials.
Because of the extensive nature of the redevelopment work a claim was submitted to HMRC which led to a corporation tax saving of £208,000. HMRC enquired into the relevant tax return. However, after a robust defence of the claim by Armstrong Watson and a site visit by HMRC, the claim was accepted in full.
This opportunity has led us to refurbishing five buildings on the site retaining the previous structure and providing good quality warehouse space at a competitive price. Without this happening the buildings would likely have remained in their previous dilapidated condition and would have eventually been demolished.
