Mike Kienlen

Mike is Head of Restructuring and Insolvency and Chairman of Armstrong Watson LLP, with more than 35 years’ experience advising businesses, lenders and stakeholders through complex financial andstrategic challenges. He began his career in London with Arthur Andersen, before going on to hold roles with Buchler Phillips and Kroll qualifying as both a Chartered Certified Accountant and Licensed Insolvency Practitioner.

Mike joined Armstrong Watson as a Partner in 2005, establishing the firm’s Leeds restructuring and insolvency practice and playing a key role in the growth of the wider team. Under his leadership, the Restructuring and Insolvency service has expanded into a strong, multi-location team operating across the North of England and Scotland.

Alongside his client-facing work, Mike has played a significant role in shaping the firm’s strategic direction. He joined the management board in 2007, became an equity partner in 2008, and was appointed Chairman in 2018. In this role, he provides leadership across the firm while continuing to support clients on complex restructuring and insolvency matters.

Mike is known for his calm, assured approach and his ability to guide stakeholders through high-pressure situations, balancing technical expertise with commercial insight. His focus is on delivering clear direction and sustainable outcomes, whether supporting business recovery, managing risk, or navigating transition.
