Case Study: Different level of service leads to strategic growth for Brocklesby Limited

“The commercial benefits that we have seen by working with Armstrong Watson have been significant and enabled us to improve in a variety of ways that we would never have done had we still been with our old firm of accountants”

Robert Brocklesby, Managing Director

Background

Armstrong Watson were appointed to act for Robert Brocklesby personally and his group of companies in order to realise the commercial growth potential of the group.

Why they sought to work with us?

Having previously been with a small accountancy firm, Robert and is group felt that the previous advisers did not provide great service for the following reasons:

  • Their service was not partner led and not joined up
  • As an owner managed business they didn’t receive the level of service or expertise required.
  • They didn’t receive value for money
  • Their advice was reactive rather than proactive
  • They did not invest in the relationship

What did we do?

  • We implemented a more efficient tax planning structure. This exercise gave greater potential for shareholder wealth to be realised at more efficient tax rates for future generations.
  • The recommendations made to the directors in the year end management report added value on a commercial improvement level.
  • Provided solutions to software needs by consulting and advising on the adoption of software for companies within the group through wider connections
  • Undertook a technically complex group restructuring that allowed the business to move forward on an improved basis.

How we did it?

We worked successfully with Rob, Nigel and the team by:

  • Investing in the relationship and understanding their needs on both an operational and wider structured level;
  • Delivering the required results and keeping promises made through technical ability and the breadth of services available;
  • Demonstrating added commercial value through proactively understanding the needs of the business.
  • Quarterly advisory meetings have formed the basis for understanding both the individuals and the businesses needs.

“Every time we meet we learn something new and obtain quality advice that enables us to either make some money, save some money or at the very least, gives us the peace of mind that we have considered every option before we make strategic decisions”

Robert Brocklesby, Managing Director

Results

  • The undertaking of wider taxation planning has led to greater tax efficient structures and a strong improvement in the wealth realised by the shareholders.
  • Suggested audit added value improvements were facilitated by the directors on an operational level in order to add value to the business.
  • Rob, Nigel and the team are extremely satisfied with the move to Armstrong Watson.

“Many accountancy firms say that they build relationships and create value, yet from our experience the reality is often far different. In our opinion the partners go out of their way to build a strong and trusting relationship that are made to last. By working closely together with the Audit and Tax team they have an extremely joined up approach where all advice is balanced and joined up.”
