Grant funding to help identify your business’s cyber risks

Rebecca Wilson

Businesses in Cumbria have the opportunity to access funding that could help enhance their operations and security.

Cumbria Business Growth Hub is currently offering ÂŁ500 and ÂŁ1,000 advice vouchers to businesses in Westmorland and Furness which can be used towards the cost of business consultancy, including cyber security support.

In the coming weeks, grants are expected to be launched for businesses in the Cumberland Council area too.

These vouchers do not require match funding, although businesses can choose to add more to enable additional activities.

Recent cyber attacks

Recent cyber attacks on major retail giants such as M&S, Co-op, and Harrods highlight the vulnerability of businesses to cyber threats. While large businesses are often targeted, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are equally at risk.

Nearly half of UK businesses reported a cyber security breach or attack in the past year and the first step to protection for businesses is understanding where the risks lie.

Cyber criminals are constantly developing new techniques to exploit weaknesses in systems, making it crucial for businesses to stay vigilant. Even those with IT support from a Managed Service Provider (MSP) should consider third-party verification of their security position.

Improving cyber security

A good starting place for businesses to understand their current security posture is through a cyber health check and Cumbria Business Growth Hub’s advice vouchers will help businesses with funding for this.

A Cyber Health Check offers a clear, independent view of an organisation’s current ability to protect against cyber threats. It helps identify potential vulnerabilities, assess existing controls, and prioritise areas for improvement. The process supports alignment with industry best practices, enhances awareness of key risks, and provides reassurance to stakeholders.
