Benchmarking services for Law Firms

Measuring your performance against the best in the profession

In a competitive legal market, knowing your own figures is only half the battle. To drive real improvement, you must understand how your firm compares to your peers. Are your fee earners as productive as they could be? Is your lock-up significantly higher than the regional average? Are your staff costs eating too much of your margin?

At Armstrong Watson, we provide the answers. Using our extensive national database and our position as a founding partner of Law Firm Ambition, we deliver bespoke benchmarking reports that turn raw data into a roadmap for improved profitability. As the sole accountancy firm working in partnership with the Law Society, our benchmarking insight is trusted by managing partners across the UK.

What we measure: the KPIs that drive success

Our benchmarking service goes beyond top-line turnover. We focus on the granular metrics that dictate the health of a modern law firm:

  • Profit per Equity Partner (PEP): We analyse how your firm’s most senior fee earners compare to national and regional averages.
  • Fee Income per Fee Earner: We identify the "profit gap" in your practice areas, highlighting where productivity can be improved through better systems or staffing ratios.
  • Lock-up and Collection Cycles: We measure your WIP and debtor days against the profession’s top performers, providing the evidence needed to challenge internal billing behaviours.
  • Overhead and Staff Cost Ratios: We benchmark your non-fee-earning costs to ensure your back-office function is as lean and efficient as possible.

Moving from data to action

A benchmarking report is only valuable if it leads to change. We don't just hand over a report; we sit down with your management board to interpret the results. We help you identify the "quick wins" and the long-term strategic shifts required to close the gap between your current performance and the top-quartile firms in your sector.

Transparent pricing and added value

We believe that data-led insight should be accessible to all firms.

  • Included as Standard: For our clients who use us for annual accounts and tax compliance, a high-level benchmarking report is often included as an added-value component of your year-end package.
  • Standalone Benchmarking Projects: If you are not an existing client but require a deep-dive benchmarking exercise to support a merger, acquisition, or internal restructure, we provide this as a standalone service. Standalone projects typically start from £1,630 plus VAT, depending on the size of the firm and the depth of the analysis required.
