Management information (MI) review for Law Firms

Turning data into actionable intelligence

In a competitive legal market, you cannot manage what you do not measure. Yet, many law firm partners find themselves drowning in data while remaining starved of actual insight. Standard management accounts often focus on historical figures that lack the context needed to make informed, real-time decisions about fee-earner productivity, department profitability, or lock-up risks.

As the sole accountancy firm working in partnership with the Law Society, Armstrong Watson specialises in refining the way law firms view their financial performance. Our Management Information (MI) Review is designed to strip away the noise and provide the clarity Managing Partners and COFAs need to lead with confidence.

What a high-performance MI review includes

We don't just look at your profit and loss; we look at the 'engine room' of your firm. Being a founding partner of Law Firm Ambition gives us a unique perspective on the KPIs that truly drive legal success. Our review process focuses on:

  • KPI Optimisation: Identifying the "lead indicators" that predict future performance, such as file opening trends and matter velocity, rather than just "lag indicators" like banked fees.
  • Lock-up and WIP Management: Creating clear visibility of your working capital, highlighting where cash is tied up and identifying the specific hurdles to prompt billing.
  • Fee-Earner and Departmental Profitability: Moving beyond simple turnover to understand the true cost of service delivery across different practice areas.
  • Bespoke Reporting Frameworks: Designing streamlined, visual reporting templates that allow partners to digest complex information at a glance during monthly meetings.

Empowering your COFA and management team

A robust MI framework is a vital tool for your COFA, providing the financial transparency required to meet SRA regulatory expectations. By ensuring your data is accurate and timely, we help you identify financial red flags early, protecting the firm’s stability and the partners’ capital.

Transparent and fixed pricing

We believe in the same transparency we advocate for in your reporting. To help you manage your budget, we offer fixed-fee MI reviews.

  • Typical MI Review Fee: For law firms of up to 50 people, our payment-in-advance fixed fee is £9,210 plus VAT.

For larger or multi-site practices, we provide a bespoke quote following an initial consultation. This investment typically pays for itself many times over by identifying hidden inefficiencies and unlocking trapped working capital within the first few months of implementation.
